The three pillars of sustainable development - society, environment and economy - are interconnected through the dimension of culture. Education is a central aspect of culture also, as well as the prime medium through which a country creates the capacity - the knowledge, values, skills and living practices - for achieving social, environmental and economic goals. Linking social, economic, cultural and environmental concerns is a crucial aspect of sustainable development.
Current major challenges are Food Security, Energy Security, Water Security all are dependent on how we control growing world population itself. Currently engineering education has to be strengthened based on the three-cycle approach Social, economic and environmental concerns. To sustain the current situations we need more engineers who could work in the diverse fields with diversified knowledge. eFau (Faculty of Asian university) is setting up a engineering education system based on the sustainable development. Our current courses are taught by issues driven, requirements and demand driven and eFau primarily focuses on the three stages of the Engineering cycle namely understanding problem based, design based, project based in undergraduate level.
One example is in the Second year Mechanical engineering course "Engineering research methods" which teaches project research cycle. Another third year subject, Design based "Design Make Test" and in the final year students are able to consolidate these two skills with theoretical aspects into their Final Year Project Called "Senior Research Project" consisting of three semesters work load.
Currently eFau - Mechanical Engineering Department focus is to develop Sustainable Energy Engineering and Technology as a Minor 1 and Mechatronics as Minor 2. These two courses have enormous opportunities in the job-economic, environmental, social and cultural in Thailand and abroad.
